White Knuckle Abstinence

Ideally, we move forward and take positive steps toward our goals by visioning the future and excitedly doing what it takes to get there. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Sometimes we let life – or fear – get in the way even when the vision is compelling and glorious!

In 12-Step recovery, the phrase, “white knuckle abstinence” means doing whatever it takes to steer clear of our substance of choice whether that be alcohol, drugs, overeating, under eating, or gambling. This can be unpleasant and hard – yet possible with the help of supportive sponsors, meetings, inspirational readings.

What does “white knuckle abstinence” look like around vision work, around living a fulfilling, purposeful, passionate life? I think it is another tool in our tool box. Perhaps it’s the sledge hammer which may not do the prettiest work but does do something! Maybe it’s the hand saw when we really need a chain saw yet again, it moves us forward. Maybe it is an accountability partner. Maybe it’s getting up 15 minutes early each day to exercise – kicking and screaming all the way – but doing it.

If you’ve been stuck in a rut or backsliding on your dreams, ask yourself:

What would a dose of White Knuckle Abstinence look like?

It’s all “WE”

Fact: NOTHING we have ever accomplished in this lifetime, from our first breath to our last, is ever completely our doing. Nothing. We are born into another’s hands and care. We are taught by those around us, our basic needs are provided by others, the books we read were written by others, the tools we garden with were created by others. Truly, no matter how self-reliant and independent I think I am, I am WE.

Today, I invite you to wonder with me:

What if I intentionally honored WE creation?
What if I embraced WE thinking?
What is the power in WE?

What if you knew that “all is well”?

What if, in the face of physical pain, disaster, stress, discomfort, intense growth or any other of life’s challenges, what if, in every situation, in every moment, you knew: “All is well”?

Think about it. We human beings can get through an amazing lot of challenge when we know it’s worth it and that it will end. As a simple example, consider the 30 minute exercise video that feels like it will turn your body to mush. With each passing minute, knowing that it will end, you actually feel more and more positive and anticipate the celebration of success!

And sometimes, “outer knowing” is not available. We can’t know when “it” will end or how “it” will turn out.

Inner knowing, however, believing, having faith, these are personal choices. In any situation, we can choose to believe, to know, that “All is well.

What does the “all is well” perspective offer you?

Time

What is your relationship with time? Do you:

Experience it?
Use it wisely?
Cherish it?
Fear you’ll waste it?
Fill it up?
Budget it?
Never have enough of it?

What would be different if there was no time?
