What are you attached to?

“Dare to live by letting go.”
― Tom Althouse

Perhaps you’ve heard about the Buddhist teaching of non-attachment, perhaps not. My layman’s definition is this: when I must have or must do, when I think my ideas are *right* and I won’t let go, when I see the outcome in a situation and then hold onto it as the only possibility,  I am attached. And moreover, my strong attachments can be very draining of my energy, or in Buddhist terms, cause me to suffer. Today I became aware that I am even attached to the spiritual practices that I hoped would guide me toward non-attachment! I struggle to release the books I “should” read or the teachers I “should” listen to.

The quote above, “Dare to live by letting go”, is a good reminder for me. In this lifetime, we have the opportunity to amass all sorts of things: stuff, knowledge, habits, dreams, friends, activities, even money! Yet, there comes a point where more is NOT merrier. And stockpiling any of this get heavy and blocks us from actually living this moment and noticing what is here now. We are often too busy collecting, managing, planning, carrying the load — to live.

Today, I am releasing the pile of books I was trying to find time to read. They’ll return to me if and when I need to read them! I am letting go of a belief that I *should* meditate more and imagining more presence in each moment, each activity. Today I release the fear that if I let go of “it”, I will somehow miss out or fail at life. Today I dare to live by letting go! What about you?

What are you attached to?
What living is impossible as long as you hold on?
What would it feel like to let it go?

Celebrating You!

Celebrating You Inspiration Card

Some of us struggle to know, feel and believe that we are enough, that we do enough, that we have anything special to offer in this life. If you don’t struggle, if you are blessed to know and love yourself and to be who you are from true humility, WONDERFUL! You are a blessing to all who know you. Keep on keeping on bringing your special light to our world.

If you, like me, don’t always remember the beauty, goodness, love and uniqueness that you are, then this message is for you:

Take a moment to remember how special you are …
… and how lucky the world is to have you in it.
You make the world a better, brighter place.

If – and when – you struggle to believe it, gift yourself with some time apart to consider:

In what ways do you excel?
What is your inner sunshine?
Who soaks up your rays?
What announcement can’t you receive?
What would be missing if not for you?

If you can’t answer those questions for yourself, then take them to someone you love and trust who likely soaks up your rays. Ask them. They know! Listen with your heart to their responses. Today is a day to celebrate YOU!

What is mine to give?

Brilliance

I don’t often share another’s work in its entirety, but this poem was shared in sacred circle yesterday, and it touched me deeply:

Clearing by Martha Postlewaite

Do not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world
so worthy of rescue.

Many of us desire to have positive, powerful impact in our world. We see all that needs attention and we want to do our part. Martha’s words remind us of the importance of discernment.

What is mine to give?

We cannot do it all – we don’t have to! But we will never know what is truly our gift to offer if we don’t create the time and space to listen to our inner voice, our heart and soul.

Today and every day, give yourself the gift of listening through meditation, journaling or just the pause to take 3 deep breaths. In the space you create, be open and listen. You may hear the song for the moment; you may receive the song for your life. With your song on your lips, give yourself to Life as only you can.

Making Choices

ANewFocus4By6

If you’ve tried to experience the kind of fulfilling life that could be described as living your vision or living with purpose, you know it isn’t always easy. Creating the life of our dreams requires that we make choices in service of our dream. Sometimes, those choices are easy to make and follow through on. Sometimes they are easy to make and hard to follow through on. Sometimes those choices seem impossible to make but once we do, the follow through feels so good!

Today, I offer a few questions that might help you stay focused on that life you dream of. Notice I’m not promising that you’ll find them easy! The next time you wonder, “Should I do *this* or not? Is *this* relationship for me? Does *this* fit into the life of my dreams?” consider:

Is this a heart throb,
or a means to my core heart throbbing life dream?

Is this one of my top 3? 2? 1?

If I had to take something away …
stop something in order to add this …
what would I stop?

Finally, if you decide to add *it* anyway, add *it* even though it is not in service of your dream, add *it* even though it takes you away from your vision, maybe it’s time to ask:

How important is my vision?

Are you ready for rainbow swirl?

Take a moment to think about the world you live, play and work within. Browse your outer world, but survey also your inner world, the beliefs and ideas you allow to impact your choices. If your world was ice cream, would it be plain vanilla? Succulent strawberry? Charming chocolate? Maybe it’s a bit of all three and you’ve got Neapolitan going on!

If you do move around in Neapolitan, are you segregated:

allowing some ideas and beliefs in one area of your life but not another, showing up some places as plain vanilla and others as succulent strawberry?

Today, imagine expanding your scope, the colors and flavors and style that you play with on your life journey. Imagine you added orange sherbet, pistachio or rainbow swirl:

What is possible with a bit more color?
What magic will you create with orange sherbet?
What will your rainbow swirl stir up?
