Is this serving my future or my past?

Today's idea is simple. It comes from a coaching session where I focused on my personal challenge around “stuff”. Huh? Yes, “stuff”. I started the call wanting to look at the difficulty I have both releasing and acquiring stuff. Sometimes I can expend so much energy deciding to discard something! And I can spend way too much time standing at a store deciding if I should buy something! I wanted to find a way to let this be easier…

How thick is the wall of your cage?

Yes, you heard me. Your “cage” – the artificial roadblocks and walls we each erect in order to create a sense of safety and security in our lives. Maybe you have borders around your life experience like these:

  • Never swim in a lake, it might be contaminated
  • Never question the “rules”, someone knew better who set them
  • Never share what you really think, “they” might disagree
  • Never try a new recipe, it might flop
  • Don't suggest a different holiday tradition, others might feel hurt
  • Don't try that kind of exercise, you might hurt yourself
The list could go on and on of course. Many of these rules were plastered on our walls in childhood, others we picked up from our spouse or spiritual journey or other life experience.

What will you bring with you into 2011?

Not at all a fan of New Year's resolutions, I am working with other ways of marking this moment in time. While any moment, any day, can be (and perhaps, ideally IS) a day for reflection, release, redirection, intention, this year I am gifted with 11 days away from my Lawrence job, a vacation to Florida, and a deep awareness that this time is for rest, ending, and beginning.

So, I breathe into the moment and ask to be given the questions that will guide me forward.
